I'm in the same boat, I also bought a frag of the yellow leather and it too split in half. I think the flow didn't help it since it caused it to flap and rock back and forth until the rubberband cut through.
Anyways I have it on a live rock shelf kind of in a depression now (like the middle of a bowl), not attached to anything. I tried to weigh it down slightly with some LR pieces but it eventually frees itself- but still stays in this depression. There is sand there, does anyone know if it necessarily needs to attach to LR or if it's hanging out here and the polyps are extended that should be fine?

Reefman: Also how does the sewing method work? Literally just sew the frag with needle and thread? I did a search here but could not find any reference info. Thanks for any advice.

u can either use a fine fishing line or strong thread on a needle n sew near the base but enough on the leather so it wont rip off. depending on how big the frag is, i say 2 X around a small piece of rough shape lr. tie it around the rock. if thread, by the time the thread breaks off, the leather should have attached. with fish line, u can just cut the excess once attached.
in this phase u need to adjust the flow rate where its getiing gentle flow. too much n it'll blow off when leather expands, too little n it'll rot or attack from protoea.

It'll take at least 2 weeks for it to fully attach to life rock. The net method works well for me. Good luck!

Thanks everyone for the info. The sewing method sounds like it would be better for the coral because it doesn't restrict flow, the only problem I have is that the frag pieces are so small now (with no base)- it's just like a potato chip wafer that there's not much to sew except the edges. So I think the net method may be better in this case but where do you get that net material? Probably Home Depot, Michaels, etc? And I assume that you then weigh down the corners of the net material with small pcs of LR right?
