Do it Yourself! Is there any meaning to build a skimmer for Fresh water tank?

I was told that skimmer are not useful for fresh water tank-is it right?

Protein Skimmers are mechanical devices that are made to be used in Marine Aquariums, which contain saltwater with lots of salts. You can use a Protein Skimmer in a freshwater aquarium. The skimmer will not hurt the freshwater fish or degrade the water quality in a freshwater aquarium, and freshwater will not damage the Protein Skimmer.

But the Protein Skimmer will not do much to improve the quality of the water in a freshwater aquarium. Fresh water lacks the density to allow foam fractionation. The short answer is that if you have a freshwater aquarium you do not need a Protein Skimmer.

i think your best bet is to purchase a bio wheel for a freshwater tank. BIO-Wheels quickly break down the large molecules.

It won't work, simple as that. The protein skimmers make "sea foam" which carries the undisolved solids out of the water column. Your standard power filter will do the trick, which had mechanical, chemical, and biological filtration built in. Aquaclear power filters are great!

hahaha, not intensionally... and it should be back to salt water soon.

I had skimmers on my old discus tank when "skimmers" first came out. It would foam but nothing like a salt water tank.
