Hello Everyone.

I have been involved with Fresh water fish my entire life as we had so many tanks growing up. Then went to school for Oceanography, then Salt Water going back to my teens. Currently I have not had a salt water tank in about 15 years yet in the process of starting one now. We currently have 3 brackish water tanks and one completely fresh water. Our Brackish water tanks are 75 gallon, 55 gallon and 20 gallon. Fresh water is 3 gallon which houses cherry shrimp and self cloning cray fish and if you want to include two beta fish bowls we have those too. I did manage some years ago to talk my older brother into Salt Water and he is a member of this fine forum, and so introduced me to you.

I am enclosing some pictures of some of my favorite brackish water fish we currently have.

The Salt Water tank will only be a 20 gallon for now and will house sea horses and 6-8 months later a mandarin.

I will work on another salt water tank next year when I have more time to devote to it.

My other side hobby is photography and when time allows enter photo contest.

Have a fantastic evening.

I bought an 8-10" blonde naso yesterday afternoon. Very healthy looking fish. In the tank he gets along with the other fish fine and seems really happy swimming around the center based rock work I have and occasionally through the big caves in the rock work. I know he is probably still getting used to the new environment but what kind of things should I do to try to entice it to eat? I have never experienced a fish not eating on the first day, thats why I am asking.
So far I tried flakes, mysis, and nori. Should I try something else or wait it out another day or 2? Thanks in advance for the help.

Hello,

I am currently working on a project where I am trying to create really violent water movement or even waves in a 55 gallon tank (don't worry, there are no animals in the tank, just water).

I currently have a 1500gph pump in the tank which i thought would create a lot of movement, and although it does a fine job circulating the water, however does not really break the surface.

Ideally I would like something that turns the water into raging rapids, or fills it with very violent waves that almost splash out of the tank.

Does anybody have any suggestions as to how to achieve this... preferably on the cheap... but am also open to more expensive solutions if necessary.

As far as waves are concerned, I was very impressed with this example, but am not really sure how these work exactly and they also seem extremely expensive.
youtu.be/Eehd863e5aU

I don't really care how the equipment/solution looks at all and am open to diy solutions, just trying to really make this water move on the cheap. Someone suggested I look into submersible motors but am not really sure where to start with that in nyc. I would also love to hear if there are any out-of-the-box solutions using motor boat parts or something that would allow me to achieve this.

Thanks!

Hello Everyone
I just joined the group although I am not yet a reef or even saltwater fish keeper. I have been in the aquarium hobby for about 25 years keeping mostly African Cichlids. I currently have 3 fish tanks but I have had as many as 15 at a time from 10 gallons to 125 gallons. I also had at my last home a 3500 gallon pond that I dug and built myself and can't wait to have another (maybe bigger) when I am a homeowner again.
I'm not sure when or how big but I would like to get into reef keeping and my girlfriend will not rest until she has her Sea Horses and a Mandarin.
She has some experience with saltwater and her brother is one of you guys at Manhattan Reef. We might be coming to the 2012 frag swap to learn a few things and get to know other members.
Hope to see you there.

I figured I would post things that over the years just went away with no help from me.
Hair algae.
I have no idea when I took this picture but it must have been at least 15 years ago. That fireclown is stil with me and he is almost 18 now, but look at all the hair algae. The fish and corals were in great shape, but the tank looked horrible. It left on it's own like it always does

About 2 years ago I had so many flatworms that I could not find any rock that was not covered in them. Everyone was urgeing me to use "Flatworm Exit"
IN about 6 months, every one of them disappeared. I didn't use anything.
Last year I noticed one tiny spot of this bubble algae. Everyone said I had to remove it immediately or it would cover everything in the tank and the tank would crash.
Much of it has died off and it is only on a couple of rocks. I like the stuff and think it is interesting.
