help! new clown may be sick

i got a false perc yesterday, and he is my first clown so i have no first hand experience. he's been hanging at the bottom of the tank, eating just a bit, but i have heard that this is normal for the first day or so. this morning i noticed he has a string of white poop coming out of him. in my clown research i have seen this mentioned as a symptom of brooklynella. he looks fine otherwise...bright eyes, skin is fine, color good, just the white poop. is this a sign of disease? can it be something other than brooklynella? what should i do? btw, he is in my quarrantine tank and is the only fish to have used it as i just set it up last week.

Wasn't your tank recently set up?

QT tank set up a week ago?

You should be holding off on buying any live-stock.

yes, and it cycled and all water parameters have been stable. but the clown is not in my main tank, he is in a QT tank. i was told that you don't cycle a QT tank when i asked about it here.

is there anything i can do for the clown right now though?

so a clown can have white poop and all can be well? unfortunately i went back to my lfs and examined the tank where i got my fish. one fish was dead with the white slime covering his whole body and another one had the white slime creeping up around his belly. my fish has just the white poop and his breathing had become labored. all this info combined led me to go with the formalin treatment. i know this can be harsh, but based on the activity going on in the tank, the lfs guy and i decided it was worth a shot to try to save him. he perked up a lot after a dip and was active for a little while...now he's back to hanging out at the bottom and breathing is still labored, but his gills aren't expanding nearly as much as this morning. as for now i'm treating for brooklynella and waiting and seeing.

white stringy poops means its got internal parasite or internal worms such as nematodes, the infected fish will not eat and eventually starve to death. You need to treat it will medicine for internal parasite such as metronidazole or hexamix or pipzine. Goodluck.

there's no reason to worry about the white poo. you have to remember that many LFS don't feed. the clown probably was crappin out what little he had in his stomach. just keep feeding him and he should be fine.

i'm not saying he isn't sick i'm just saying don't start treating for things you aren't 100% sure of. give him some time in the qt.

i had a pair of clown that had that broklynella. the female passed(harrased by my coral beauty) but the male is fine now. i didn't treat or anything, besides garlic in the food.

thanks for all the advice. my clown is doing much better. his breathing has returned to normal, he is swimming and finally eating. he looks great and there are no more white poops.
