i'm surprised those stores (petco, petland, etc) still sell reef stuff. i cant imagine many reefers buying from such stores. most reefers are more advanced and tend to shop in pet shops that really know about reef care.

In adition to their health, you run the risk of introducing deseases or parasites when buying livestock from those stores.
that said, i have a 6-line i bought from a petco over a year ago (who sat in the bag for over 4 hours before being added to my tank) and he is as happy as ever.

the advantage to shopping in such stores is sometimes you can get something great for a cheap price simply because they dont know better.

They're getting the customer that has just started and doesn't know better. They see a clam, shrimp or a nice piece of coral and the sales guy tells them they could have it in their tank with no problems, and the price is usally very cheap, and the customer buys it. As long as they turn over the stock, and some corals and inverts do last for awhile before they die, they'll keep on getting them. If they don't they would carry them anymore, just like the Petland by me no saltwaterfish. You can get some good deals from these places, and since they want to move things you can even bargin with them, but you need to be very careful.

General rule of thumb with the tridacna clams are if they are 3.5" or larger, you do not need to target feed them. They will receive most of their nutrition from the symbiotic algae cells in their mantle. They will also filter the water for food such as when you wipe down the glass of green algae film.

You can still feed them but I find that it just pollutes your tank faster.
You can grow your own phyto from a culture or purchase DT's phytoplankton or some use Knop's Coral Vit F which is a yeast based formula.

I personally have stopped feeding my clams when they've hit the 3" mark but you should stay with the 3.5" indicator.

i think they start using light to feed at 3"
u should target feed if less than 3"
buy DT's plankton then grow your own...

MANDARIN= with 96watts in 46g bow... i wouldn't get a clam unless u have HID.. some sort of metal halide... PCs don't penetrate the water that deep with that great intensity. Even if u keep the clam at the top of the tank your odds are severly reduced... rule of thumb... 250W MH for 18"-24"
400W for 24"-36"

I would suggest white feeder clams they are ugly though and are usually used as filter feeders to clean the tank.....

Stay away from the flame scallop... as they will need direct feeding.. and the survival rate even for professional reef keepers are extremely low
