Return

DEEPWATER said:
chris ,can you gat a pic on how you have your return pointing ,,
my brother had the same set up and he has the same prob ,i used a maxijet 900 to move the water and everything is cool

Ill post pics of the return later but its heavily modded (i used a clear tube with an attachment from an eheim cone for the return tube) it sounds wacky i know but when you see the pic youll get the idea it works well....

I also have 3 power heads going one on either side facing eachother and on rotating head power head next to it....should i maybe place the rotating power head facing me when viewing the tank in the back?

try to place one so you have flow on top of the water ,this will help you alot ,,,you can try it ,if not put the pump back in the place you took it from ,

Ok so i know this is a long drawn out thread but my tank is still cloudy above the rocks and its annoying to be honest...i just tried to move the overflow further into the water but that just dropped my water level in the tank and raised the level in the sump no noticable difference! I did however place my rotating powerhead on a tilt so its hitting the surface of the water more, my batteries died on my digi so ill post later tonight pics of the return....

One last possibly answer i have some rock sedemant lying on the bottom on the sup not going anywhere should i maybe syphon it out maybe thats it???

yes, siphon out the junk on the bottom of your sump.
judging by your waterlevel on the overflow, you may need a stronger return pump.

Well what i have running is a 780gph on the 65g....if you go by the return calculator it says when done properly i would only need about 550gph maybe my return isnt in the right spot? I have it in the water about 10 inches down from the top of the tank....its custom so it has clamps with suckon cups holding it to the tank....

Ok...I'm confused . I reread this thread. Is there an oily scum on the water surface or do you have cloudiness at the top few inches of water (smog-like)?

Cloudyness

Smog like, at the top few inches, the weird thing is just got a new skimmer and have been skimming, no results yet, will try to siphon tonight the sedemant on the bottom of the tank...but i am thinking now its either the return placement or the overflow has to be lowered by trial and error at this point .....

Smog like cloudiness just on the top few inches of water despite a surface skimmer and turbulence created by return pumps and powerheads. That is physically impossible! The smog should be distributed throughout.

The only thing I can think of that would fit this smog like symptom is that your glass or acryllic is either tainted, scuffed or just plain dirty. Quite often people just rely on the magnets but try running your fingers between the clear section and the smoggy section to feel if there is difference in texture.

Meanwhile we will keep thinking..............

I did not look at the thread in the beginning cause it calls for a simple solution but the thread just kept growing so I got curious and it just did not make sense. So thats the only thing I can come up with

Its not the glass because i have been cleaning it like there is no tomorrow, wet cloth than newspaper, plus the magnet.....its def not my imagination here something is not right, the other things that go along with it is that all my corals basically died, had to give some to kuya for now to see whats up, but water parameters are still checking out ok.....fish are doing fine though and so are inverts (cleaner, etc...) ....so if something was drastic the inverts would have been first, plus signs of the stress on the fish....but knock on wood everything ok....minus the fact that i cant house corals right now ...since 2 days after the transfer (they were out in full) they diminished....

Can you post a picture of the cloudy area?

Have you verified that your return is not clogged or has anything trapped in it? I used to have the same overflow and if I had a prefilter on the return pump it would eventually clog. The water would move through the tank but not very fast and eventually there would be an algae buildup on the surface.
