Alk?

That Alk. level is fine. I try and keep mine around 10.5 dkh.

I am still confused only because Kuya's tank we tested last night and it was around 8.9 and all his corals are out and water is looking great...my tank with a low alk is looking horrible ...

When you keep your alk levels very high (11+ DKH), you will probably promote faster growth in SPS corals but you will also calcify your pumps much quicker and will need to do more maintenace more often. NSL is about 7-8 DKH, for a closed system, 8-10 DKH should be fine.

first you have to determine weather your readings are meq/l or dkh. i read that if you want good growth on you corals (sps) you should keep your alk alittle high like around 10dkh. 8.9dkh is more around the normal alk readings when you mean low what reading are you talking about.

My readings which are low...4 meq or 11 Kh bc i cant house corals everything else is fine except for that and ph which go together but this is a weird thing coming from a reefed up 30g and now fish only 65.....=(

How many times in a 24 hr period can you dose with ALK ??? Just did another reading 4.25 meq/L / 11.9 KH ....proper should be 6-9 meq/L
dude those readings your shooting for are very dangerous, i'd keep it where your at, and let it drop on it's own abit to keep around 10 to 11 kh

Just confused because if alk is ok which means ph is ok? what is causing corals not to live if all other water paramters are ok?

Go to Randy's site and read all the material and links on Cal & Alk. This should help you alot and answer alot of your questions.

Cal & Alk

Cal & Alk have a relationship that need to be keep in-line for everything to work as your corals use both Cal & Alk. Also what are your other reading likes Nitrates, SG level and temp.

Well I did have all leathers and mushrooms, but after a week of recovering from the transfer they all closed up and never came back out, so i gave them temp to a friend with a more established tank....I am using PCs for the 65g water paramters like nitrate, nitrite, alk, ca, ph etc... tested for and nothing seems out of the ordinary...using overflow/sump with 780gph with 3 power heads....temp maintains at 78 and salinity at 30 or 1.022

You just transferred all your corals and things over from a smaller tank to a larger tank you have to except some time before everything gets backs to normal. Just take your time and let everything settle and then start to add some corals and see how they do before placing more into the tank.

Your absolutely right, but wondering why some get away with the transfer and never go through a "mini cycle" of some kind and others have to in a sense start over from a fish only standpoint....

Alot of it depends on how big the upgrade is, the quality of live rock and sand or no sand. All these things play apart and some people get luck while others go through a mini-cycle or other problems like hair algae and such.

well true i have to say i did start off a week into the new tank with mim rock than a week later recieved much LR (thanks danny) and a new skimmer so prob time will tell, ahhh patience =P

Well there you go. Just give it some time keep checking your levels and maybe do a water change or two. Once everything seems to be fine place one of your coral back in, something hardy like a mushroom, and see if it does ok. At that point you should be on your way.

Remember your tank is alot bigger than what you had before and you now have a much larger bio-load and a need for a larger filter.
