we were discussing this last night at the second bar we went to.

I'm willing to host it if others will teach, we need to figure out the topics and, everyones schedules are always tough to coordinate.

start a list of topics you think would be interesting to people and we'll see what we can come up with. :)

I believe that in regards to do's & dont's we can get all of the info we need right here on MR. The problem I always have when sitting with so called experts is that they, like all of us, have their way of doing things. Just look at DSB vs BB etc.

There are plenty of guys (just look at some of the tanks) That are successfull reefkeepers. I think that if any kind of seminar should be held it should be geared towards the newbie. How to keep a reef with minimal money. There will be no discussion as to which way and how to dose and other complex topics.

It should be a session on hoe to properly start. What kind of tank should people buy. How to do basic plumbing so new keepers dont encounter overflows. Compatibility charts so people dont keep acro in a dim impure tank of 20g with 5 tangs.

How often do we see new people that make the same mistakes over and over again.

There are so many experts here on the board. Take Jhale to teach basic carpentry. Deepwater to teach basic plumbing. Jackson to talk on skimmers. There are so many things to teach.

Rather than using the resources to have an expert talking to people who have successful tanks, the resources should be dedicated to creating a section on the site with how tos, videos on carpentry, drilling etc. I believe that that is what the people need. In my opinion that is what MR is lacking - a good how to section.

As for me, I am more than willing to dedicate time and resources to a project like this. I can think of a small team between the people on this board that can make this happen.

Just my 2 cents

Reefing is simple. Patience is hard. I have been reefing for more than 13 years and spent more money and time than I wished. Every tank is different and so there is never any definative way to do things. If someone is going to teach they have to just know the basics and be able to answer questions that people have regarding their specific setups.

Thats all I got to say about that....

I agree with this....this site produces and answers/links (ty dean) all the questions any1 can ask....no need for a commitee.....and Patience IS hard most times thats all it takes!

I thInk ThaT havInG a MEeTing miGHt bE esPEcialLLlYy gOoD foOr thoSe..looollol I cant even do it anymore!

It would be good for things such a setting up calcium reactor, nielsen, reactor, skimmer basics, surge tanks....more hands on than abstract (chemistry) BB vs DSB, amino acids, ethanol(vodka)

This is starting to sound like the infamous DIY workshop.
I do think these type of things are useful regardless of what the topic is. Its always helpful to see how someone does something if they have a successful reef. later you can decide if it is a good technique for you or not. I think the more you are exposed to different ways of keeping a reef tank the more you will learn that you an arrive at the same end through a variety of means and its just a matter of picking the one that suits your setup. I have learnt a great deal just hanging out with guys on this board listening to conversations they have and asking lots of questions.

I think it is a great idea... However they can't turn into ***** sessions because one person likes DSB -vs-BB. It would need to stay on subject. Do BSDs one night and BB another....or combine them, just leave the disagreements at the door.

Some Items:

Water changes
Acclimation
Circulation / Flow
Lighting
Filtration (types)

I realize I have never met anyone from the site, but I definately think this is one way to get more people together and meeting. They could also turn into mini frag swaps... (Hey.. I will need some soon!). But I would definatelt be interested in meeting and learning...

I think you should call it a "presentation", not a class since most people like to do things differently in a "hobby" and learning is done mostly by discoveries on each?s own.

This would take MR to a level like a local club vs. an on-line venue. I can ask JBNY to present his 180 gallon reef setup and 250W MH research if someone can find a suitable location, he was just in LA presenting the same topics to MASLAC. He is a great speaker and presents well, he tells you how he does things and only his actual experience on them, no added influence from reading what other people might have done without trying it him self.
