In the latest behind-bars battle over kashrut, a death row prisoner in Connecticut is suing the state over what he says is their failure to provide kosher food for him, which he has been requesting since May 2013. JTA*reports*that convicted murdered and rapist Steven Hayes filed a lawsuit arguing that the state of Connecticut is violating his First Amendment rights as an Orthodox Jew.

In his lawsuit, Hayes said that the prison?s kitchen is not certified to provide strictly kosher food. The kitchen staff told him the food served at the prison is ?kosher-like.?

?Kosher-like is not kosher,? his lawsuit reportedly claims.

Hayes has requested prepackaged kosher meals be made available for all Jewish prisoners in the state, as well as $15,000 in ?punitive and compensatory damages.

In January, Florida prisons opted for a loose interpretation of kashrut,*offeringkosher meals to any inmate with a ?sincerely held? religious belief?regardless of what that belief might be. Immediately after the announcement, 4,417 inmates had requested kosher meals.

In the prison system Jewish get way better food than any other religion . regular inmates get the worse Muslims get a bit better than a regular inmate they get stuff like baked chicken 2 more times than regular inmates also get free peanut butter. Vegetarians.get garbage lots of peanut butter. Peanut butter is very useful in prison. But Jewish religion get real lasagna "veggie", baked chicken 2 times a week vs regular inmates 1 time a months.regular inmates get premature eggs they taste terrible. Jewish get real boil eggs. They get real tuna fish free.regular inmate buys their tuna fish 3$ same amount as in a can but comes in a pouch. In my opinion if you broke the law eat what ever the states gives you and suck it up.

when you go to prison you shouldn't have any rights after your convicted. imo

he should of thought of his rights before he took someone else's life.
give them bread and water like the old days.
