Whats most important in a reef tank? I have a question. Should i put any kind of egg crate i seen people to under all my live rock. or should all the rock make contact with the sand? Gaurlic guard any good? i just got it today how much do i pour in for a frozen cube or brine shrimp?

Regarding the garlic guard is good when your fish are picky eaters. So hold on to it till then. I also strengthens the immune system of your fish so you can soak your food from time to time in it. Regarding the eggcrate I dont use it and I dont know anyone personnall that uses it but i heard people on MR us it so might want to hear from them. I have my LR laying on the glass of the tank covered around is live sand. Happy reefkeeping.

The egg crate under the sand is not the best idea, it will create a anaerobic environment where ammonia is sure to build up.

Flow is the most important element of a reef tank. You want random and turbulent flow.

Don't put the rocks on the sand either, if it's got any depth to it....
They will just work their way through it down to the glass,
possibly causing a rock fall- especially if you have sand moving fish!
Put the rocks on the glass then the sand around the rocks.

I agree with trips, the eggcrate will creat an anaerobic zone (lack of oxygen). Not good.

I agree with scumonkey, LR on glass in a stable arrangement, then add sand.

I agree with Mark, garlic is good for finicky eaters and building immune systems (or so the theory goes).

I could be wrong... but I fail to see how the use of eggcrate will create an anerobic zone.

Even if it did, one of the purposes of a properly set up deep sand bed (not saying this is what he is doing, it just for arguments sake) is to intentionaly create an anerobic zone. It's within an anerobic zone that the bacteria that break down nitrate are found.

thats what i thought as well...aerobic zones = break ammonia down into nitrates, anaerobic zones = turn nitrates into nitrogen gas.
