first hand expierence with a hawk fish

read on the web lots of conflicting reports so want some firsthand knowledge. will a long nose hawkfish( or other hawkfish) eat crabs and snails? I know to keep them away from shrimp, but most of my tanks have hermit crabs, snails and sally light foots. will they be safe? also will this fish eat flakes? thanks steve

The only predictable fish is a dead one....even taking "1st hand experience" into account.

In general, LN hawks will not bother much if they are well fed. I've never seen one go after hermits and certainly not snails. Maybe the sally lightfoots, but I'd say it was a long shot.

It might eat flakes after it fully adjusts, but I wouldn't count on it.

IME the long nose are fairly invert safe with the exception of shrimp. However, as Deanos pointed out...

"DITTO"
My little guy has been a perfect angel! I've had him for over a year, and my shrimps, hermit crabs & snails are all accounted for.

But don't blame me if you get one that turns out to be a demon spawn.

hawkfishes do not eat snails or crabs, they do eat shrimp though that is their main diet.

I have a Coral Hawkfish who lives at peace with my hermits & snails but he is VERY well fed. He also lives with a HUGE Banded Coral Shrimp ..and I'm sure that's the only reason he's still alive

Someone should tell that to the pixy hawks (Cirrhitichthys oxycephalus) and other similar species... they love to assassinate snails.
