Do water changes. Siphon out all the detritus and as much of the hair algae you can. If you can, take out the rocks that has the hair algae and use a toothbrush to scrub it off. Make sure you have good flow no dead spots. |

the hair algae is actually on the reef sand only. i retested the phos and it was at .5.... will try the phos reactor. also my tds on my rodi unit is 000. so filters are still good. besides they are only about 1month old. |

I just had the same problem. All of a sudden in about a week, brownish green hair algae broke out all over my tank. My api test puts me at 0 phosphates, and 10 nitrates. I go to the lfs to test and they put my phosphates at 30. I cut my lighting back and have done about a 40% water change over a few days and things are already looking better. Any recommendations on some better testing kits, esp. for phosphates? |

Reefer Ratings: (3) Friends: (0) | This is a Pain but can be gotten rid of, Bob's idea about a phos reactor is good to lower the levels but is not solving the cause your readings are never 0 for phosphate or Nitrate, hence the hair algae to solve your problem do the following 1) Get a really good test kit you can get ELOS test kits from Marine Depot 2) Assuming you are using and RODI test the salt water you use for a water change. (this is ti determin if you are adding phosphate when changing water, you might need to change salt) 3) If your mixed water is good do a large 50% or more water change. 4) Feed less Phosphates will always be in your tank because its a closed system, only water changes and good husbandry will keep the levels low. To deal with the hair algae that is there get hermits, emerald crabs, maybe a tang. |
