Why do people sell chalice frags by the eye?

I don't understand, I have a round chalice with 14 or 15 eyes depending when I look at it. I'm actually waiting for this guy to get bigger I really have no idea what they do I've had him for like 4 months and he's a nice round flat little guy not these pizza slices I see lately. Why chop up this guy like a pizza then sell him for 5 or 10 bucks a slice. I don't get it.

How big do these guys get. Mine has always been round maybe an inch in diameter. That's a crazy pink color mine is green with yellow eyes.
