Why can't someone make better overflow desings!

First my hermits
then gobies
then the perculas
now even the shrimp

and the shrimp really have to squeeze himself in for the siphon tube!

Got to add a net to the mouth of the overflow, stupid commercial products.

Luckily nothing is lost except one hermit that I cannot even find the shell after it went in

He's apparently using a HOB overflow but even than this should never happen unless the teeth are broken or the water level is above the teeth and the livestock is able to swin into the box or crawl into the box freely and get sucked up due to the siphon. Wingo if your still having this problem just tell me what I swing by today and we'll take a look

Get yourself a pcs of egg creat ,cut it so it fits over the over flow,this way you wil not have this prob.JMO

Yup that's what I am going to do since I am getting a whole bunch of the egg to build my new tank in the club with a modify version of Monaco system.. Old have to use very small sized egg crate since my perculas are babies. They are very small.

Hotwheel, how is yours doing, can you share some pic with date info?

If you have babies in your tank ,i would try to line the egg creat with a net ,so you are 100% sure they wont get through .you may have to clean the net more often ,but it wil ljust come right off

you did not see finding nemo? they are trying to escape

I never liked the hang-on overflows, they would always make my tank overflow/flood. the eggcrate openings may be too big, try to find some plastic netting.

Try gutter guard from HD, the are 5" wide and comes in 20feet spools, cut and tywrap to the overflow teeth.

Something smaller would be fiberglass window screen material but I think it will clog up too easily.

What also works really well is instead of using the egg crate which has larger holes is to get yourself a NEW loufa (for use in the shower) and take it apart. I doubled mine up and put them over my HOB overflow and it has worked great.

Hey Wingo, If you are a person that likes to make stuff here is a great overflow box. Fully adjustable and the back is a stockman overflow so its very quiet.

it's funny you mention this because i found my fire blood shrimp in my pre-skimmer box. i can't tell if it was the molt or the actual dead shrimp. either way i'm gonna have to put some eggcrate on the top of it and also on my overflow box

Its also cheap enough to swap out when it gets gunked up (I have not had to change it in over a month). Plus you can get any color you want :biggrin:

i agree.. i was about to make a stupid choice and go with the HOB overflow which is good for some applications but it would of gave me to many headaches.. so i was convinced by the guys here and got it drilled. it is not worth the headaches....:smash:

I seen this nefore and have to make one of this myself now!!! I saw it in action a video too. Great DIY stuff and great DIY guy who made it.

Speaking of the design of overflow, can you please send me a diagram or some sort of info about the self cleaning skimmer-I start to see the need for it?
