It would be good to check the flow curve for each at the specific head u have and compare current draw or watts for each.
I'm definitely not an expert on pumps...
I'm curious as well..
Maybe Rkaragozler can shed some info on pumps.

Iwaki makes great pumps for big systems but their lower end pumps like the one you listed above are horrible power hogs, heck a little Mag 9.5 moves more water than that pump and only consumes 93w, the Iwaki you said was around 450?!

I'd get an Eheim 1260 which moves 635gph consuming only 65w of power, of course it's submersible BUT the pump is dead silent has no heat issues what so ever built to last!

I really want to go with an external pump. Not sure that the eheim has the head that I need, but I havent looked again!

I already msg'd Rich about the pump....

I'm going to agree with Ziggy. Just finished setting-up a 75 gallon with one of their 5000 model pumps. I was very impressed with the water movement he was getting in the tank, there is no need for powerheads in the display.
And as far as Iwaki pumps go. They will run maintenance free for at least 5 years, making them worth every last penny. Also, the model you were specifically asking about is over kill in a 75 gallon tank. It's rated for a 150 gallon tank where the equipment room is located a good fifty/more feet away from the main display.
