The tank I was supposed to get was a 90Gallon w/starfire front but that fell through. The problem is I already built a stand for it. Now I am at a crossroads. I have a 48x18 stand all ready to go and cannot figure out if I should go with a Deep Blue 90 RR or a Deep Blue 75 Rimless.

The rimless clearly looks better, but I think there are some drawbacks.
Has anyone ditched their rimless tanks due:
Fish jumping out
Cats jumping in
Evaporation
Anything else?

Thanks,
Justin

I love the look of the rimless. Plus I would not have any covers on my tank anyway, block too much light.

I don't have any fish in my tank yet, but jumpers can be a problem. I don't have cats so that is not a problem with me.

The tank has a very elegant look.

Even with a rimless tank - there are ways to add a cover to them that are not overly obvious.
Many of the fish that we commonly keep are known jumpers, so a cover is a necessity to protect the fish.
Rookie07 & Bigsink have the type I am suggesting, and it is made with Velcro edging to attach the netting..I looked but can't find any pics this morning. Hopefully one of them will drop by this thread and post a link to a pic.

Keeping cats out of a tank...any cover won't help much if the cat is hell bent on doing a swan dive into the tank but it will slow them down and make it a single attempt and it will keep wandering paws out (though a free standing tank is hard to stick your paws into...).

All tanks will have some evaporation and a cover won't change that. Glass covers are not suggested as they hinder oxygen exchange and diminish your lighting's effectiveness. A netting type cover does not have these drawbacks.

Thanks Kathy, its nice to know I can protect the fish with a simple cover. I think I have an idea of what you are talking about. For me, I have always used covers, but that is because I've always used them as a place for the lights to rest.

How about the size difference between the two The 75Rimless is 48x18x20 and the 90 is 48x18x24. The 4 inches vericaly does make a difference when I look at a rule, but I think it is more than compensated by being able to look in from the top. Is this a true experience? I've yet to see a live rimless tank, though I have seen frag tanks. Is there any fish that would take advantage of the extra tank height, or is this the same because the length is identical.
For evaporation I plan to use an autotopoff system in the sump so that should help with that.
THanks,
Justin

Hi slytsi,

Tropical Island aquarium in Deer Park, has, what I believe, is a 75 gallon rimless set up as one of their show tanks. It is an amazing set up. I believe they have ACAN LED lighting for the tank which, IMO, makes it look even more amazing..

Definitely a tank I would upgrade to but then again, all I have is a 6 gallon Fluval Edge so anything for me would be considered a great upgrade..lol
