tank overflow question

hey whats up everyone, thanks again for having a great frag swap, i am looking into buying a new tank a 150 tall but dont now how many overflows to get put in or how many closed loops or even what tank to buy. i want to be able to keep a mixed sps and lps tank but not sure what to do , some advice please. thanks again derm

Hey Tim. How tall you looking to go? Keep in mind, 30" tall tanks are hard to reach into areas to aquascape and just do maintenance. Also, difficult to suggest overflow design without knowing dimensions.

Post up the dims and it'll be easiner to design plumbing.

thanks ruus the tank dimensions are going to be 48 wide 30tall and 24 deep but what do you guys think about a perfecto tank with one corner flow ii think its 1200 gallons per hour or 1500 not sure but i want to get as much feed back from everyone before i go and buy my tank

The one corner overflow unfortunately doesn't give enough information. A 1" overflow will allow 600 gph to flow through it. The mathematics of it change a bit. A 2" overflow will permit more flow than two 1" pipes (less pvc material causing friction).

Those tank dimensions you gave equate to a 150 gallon tank. I like the idea of one center overflow better than one in the corner. You can split the return to either side of the overflow box and create some nice surface agitation.

You also don't have to go with a huge, monster return pump. Circulation can be attained by a closed loop and/or powerheads. The overflow just has to handle enough water to adequately handle the requirements of your skimmer, UV, CR, fuge, etc.

Keep in mind, all this is JMO. There are varying schools of thought and lots of right ways to do things. You have to be comfortable with your husbandry and maintenance routine.

Hay Tim hows it going? If you want to save some money in the long run go with Tunze pumps instead of the closed loop. A lot cheaper to run than a huge return pump.Did you ever get that reactor up and running? If you want look into glass cages for a tank, if I were you I would definatly look into getting starfire glass.Good luck Tim.......
