I'm having heat problems. with no heater my tank tempture is at 84-85 constant. im running the mag 9 return, asm g3 skimmer, 2 seios. that's everything i can think of that transfers heat besides lighting. i have a fuge light and will be running t5s. the lights are not even on yet. is the mag putting too much heat? if so, what can of pump should i swap it with? ehiem? i will hook up fans later on but it's not even summer yet. im trying not to go the chiller route. what can i do???

I am going to agree with everyone else, fans may help turning off your skimmer during the pm may help, but it has only hit 78 degrees during spring so far and your tank is that high, i would find the coldest place where you can put the tank or buy a chiller. or maybe both.

Guys all he has to do is take the mag pump off the tank because its acting like a heater. The 90W and heat generation of the pump combined with a smaller water volume is raising the temperature of his tank. He should look for a chiller anyway as a backup but just swap out the mag for a lower wattage and better pump and he should be good.

what size tank?
whats the temp. in the room?
is the tank located near the room heater?
have you considered external pumps?
have you tried using a fan to blow on the aquarium?
does the tank get hit with sunlight?

try using a quietone pump from fosters barely any noise and or extra heat in the tank with my heater on my tank barely goes over 79 and my room used to be an attic w/previous owners, so the heat def stays i the area of the tank, with an open top and my windows open and a fan for now its good, summer comes along AC def and maybe invest in a chiller, will be the first summer with the new larger tank....

it's a 72 gal with a 20 gal sump. i disconnected the mag for now and definately see the temp dropping. i'll leave it for a couple of hrs and see what happens. if it is the pump, any other pump you guys recommand? i cant go external because i cant take out the sump to drill for it unless i take the whole tank down. will try to hook up 2 fan on the sump soon. that will help i hope.

Sean, no direct sunlight. it is near the heater but heater's off. the room is 75 constant, for now.

Use controller to control your fans ,same if you get a chiller
I use a ranco controller ,one singe for fans and one double for chiller and heater ,my tank stays at 78 to 80 no more ,i also had a pump that gave off more heat ,i changed to a smaller pump and temp stays steady
good luck

Try the fans like everyone said it really works great ,I have one on my fuge and 4 compfan(from FRY) in my canopy (but only use one for now ,the rest are for the summer time .If you want to see heat problem ,come to my apt in hte mid summer .Its 95 outside ,its 200 in my apt ,I live on the 6th floor and get 6hrs of direct sun ,not to mention sun beams down on hte roof ,Hmm im the top floor
How that for heat prob, hope it make you feel better ,LOL

Thanks ink and Sean but I had a little inside help, I've seen his setup :shhh:.

I've heard ehiems are good but maybe dropping down the pump a little would help also. My thinking (which isn't really true) is the more electricity you put in the more heat you have to take out.
