Blue Cloves?

Hello, was wondering if they will over grow or kill other corals? I would like them to fill in the gaps on my live rock but do not want them to hamper the growth and well being of my other corals. I tried using the search function but it brought up every post containing the words "Blue" and "Cloves". Thanks in advance.

Google blue sarcothelia and see if thats what your talking about. I put these in my old tank a couple years back, they grow like weeds and they will overrun corals, i had them growing on the mats of my zoos and stuff. In my most recent tank, a couple snuck in on a piece of rock i transfered and i spend an hour or two every month or two hunting them down with a toothbrush. They look great if thats what you want, but they are very difficult to control.

Thank you for your reply. I've heard that they'll pretty much lose out against all other corals and I've heard the opposite too! Just wanted to see the general consensus on here was. I like the way tanks look when they fill in all over, but not at the price of losing corals

I have them spreading all over...sps and lps seem to push them back...they will overrun zoas though

OK thanks. That's what i was afraid of. I didn't want them killing my rics and zoas.

I would be careful with them. I had them spawn in one of my tanks and it started growing everywhere(rocks, sand, acrylic, etc.). Didn't kill any corals, but I couldn't give them away fast enough.:eek1:

Did you have them on their own little island away from rocks? I hope not, cause I have a small frag of them.:scratchch

Even if they are on there own island they will spread to other rocks if they ever get knocked off.

I would worry about them bothering the rics as the rics will most likely sting them

They SPAWNED, as well as spread. Meaning they started poping up EVERYWHERE. I don't think it would have made a difference of it being on an island or not.

But to answer your question, no they weren't on their own island. they're not the end of the world because you can trade them into LFS's for credit! :biglaugh:

A little aiptasiax or joes juice squirted on top of them will kill them for a month or so until they start to spread back if you dont get the whole area.

(The lavender ones sticking up are daisy polyps I think.)

Mine haven't spread anywhere, but I've heard people say they can take over like crazy.

Mine grow and have spread all over my tank. But I have not had any problems with them taking over any of my other corals if anything I would say my Zoe's and acans have taken over the clove polyps...

Thanks pbjelly! Got it now. Yes the ones I have are sympodium, and yes they are a nice frag. I got them from Reef's Creation. Alan has nothing but beautiful stock......................
