I was looking at sumps for a 57 gallon Reef tank and the Aqueon Proflex Model 2 got my attention. The only thing that got me a bit confused about this sump is that the skimmer gets placed in the third compartment along with the return pump. I was under the impression that the skimmer gets placed in the first compartment where the water flows in from the display tank. What is the benefit of having the skimmer in the third compartment? What are the pros and cons of this sump. What other sumps should I be looking at?

I looked at the Aqueons as well and someone from here recommended a trigger systems sump. I like the design much better. I do not own one but when I have the money and the time to change out my sump they will be getting my business.

+1 on the Trigger Sys sump. You can have the dimensions customize to fit your needs. Aqueon uses thin acrylic and not as sturdy as the Trig Sys and people have had to modify the aqueon to better fit there setup like separating the skimmer from the return. Look up reviews on YouTube.

For the money the Proflex are very good sumps. I agree that the location for the skimmer is against what is usually run on most systems. I was able to get a great deal on the Proflex 4 setup. Did I have to modify it to suit my needs? Yes but I still came out way cheaper than most other options. Less than $20 for a piece of acrylic and Weldon16. The Proflex have a lot to offer as far as options go. As far as the thinner material goes I have not seen any bowing or flexing of mine. The unit is very well put together. With the number of walls in the unit there is plenty of support. Triple 4" filter socks on mine are a nice touch also. I was able to convert the right side of the unit to a very useable refugium (10"x14"x10"). I run an I-Tech Skimmer with a Tunze Hydrofoamer which is on the large side. I also run a TLF reactor. My Triton 5 and Maxijet 1200 both fit in the return section along with my homemade PH probe holder as well as my ATO floats. Neither myself nor my tank care what color the acrylic is ;)

An hour of my time and $20 and I'm VERY happy with it.
