Hello,

My question is, Where does the drain go? If the RODI is shut off via a float valve does that stop the drain also? Does it matter if it has pressure pump?

I'm trying to set up a auto top off/ auto water change system.

This is how I'm planning to run the system:

RODI split and connected to both sump (auto top off) and reserve tank (for water changes)

ATO's will control 2 pumps. 1 - to pump water out and another to pump water in from reserve.

Also do you guys see any issues in my system?

Thank you so much,

I belive people that do that just put the drain hose into the toilet plumbing somehwere or into any drain for that matter cause it runs all the time.

on a side note. doing that is super wasteful and you risk a flood and nuking your tank. if that float valve sticks it will just dump water into your sump until you notice. if your rodi runs 150gpd and it takes u 12hrs to notice that is 75 gallons in your living room.

I would highly advise you to make a top off reservoir that is no larger then the amount of xtra water your sump could hold if it all pumped out because of a float malfunction.

Firstly, Thank you for your input.

Secondly, I've never heard of a float valve sticking. Have you? or anyone else? Perhaps have had an experience like that? I thought it was as rare as a tank cracking no?

Third, if the RODI is powered by water pressure and the drain just keeps running doesn't that mean my RODI will never turn off? hence filters going bad in days??

I would very much like to understand if anyone has anything to add.

I have my ro/di filter system hooked into my sump with a float valve. I also have a booster pump which has a electronic solenoid which shuts off the water when the pressure builds up in the line from the float valve closing when the sump is full. I run mine on a basic timer. I have it go on everyday from 10:00 pm - 10:30 pm since I know I will be home at that time. Hope this helps you get a idea.

Generally not a good idea to run the RODI directly to your sump. Preparing for the worst - when (not if) the valve in your sump fails, you'll nuke your tank with too much pure water and you'll overflow the sump.

A better approach to what you're trying to do would be to have two reservoirs for DI water. One would be large enough to hold a weeks worth of top off water, and this reservoir would get filled once a week. The other reservoir would be large enough to hold a water change, and it would get filled whenever convenient.

Ideally you'd have your Top Off Reservoir (TOR) gravity drain to a float valve in your sump. So when the valve in your sump fails, the pure water flood to your sump would be limited to the amount of water in your TOR.

If you can't have the TOR gravity drain, there's lot's of options using float switch and pumps.

Plan for the worst, and hope for the best!

Never configure your RODI system so that the waste water runs all the time. You'll waste a lot of water, increase your water bill, and burn through your prefilters. There are plenty of easy ways to avoid that.

A lot of good info is in this thread. I just wanted to add that I did have a float valve fail on me. It got stuck in the down position. It was a kent marine brand valve so I thought I was safe Now I use a leak detector from Brs and when it senses water it shuts rodi flow off
A lot
