I just went to the union square petco to get some frozen food to try and feed the filefish I have acquired. in one of their "reef" tanks there is a beautiful purple maxima about 2.5" big. It looks like it's in great shape. So if your looking for a little clam go check it out and save it.
fyi, they also have some of the biggest pieces of live base rock I've ever seen, about $7/pound. they are really big.

i actually got one from them 3 weeks ago and it doing well. the reason why they lose alot of clams is becuase their tanks and light suck. i opened up their "reef" tank cabinet and there was sort of filtration what so ever. someone should rescue that poor little guy before he goes belly up

I know, it's under NO flourecent lighting as far as I could see.
Is it even worth trying to talk to them? I do want someone to "rescue" it/buy it. But they will just get more.
I think the only reason they loose clams is like GQ22 said they have no clue what they are doing. The clam I saw looked perfectly healthy.
But for how long? It's such a shame. damn petco.

Hehe...If we stop the clams they'll just bring in something new that they can kill.

they need to be target fed. around 4 or 5 inches is when they just use the light for food. it may depend on the species as well.

I just acquired a 4" Gold Maxima from Fishtown USA.

Do you guys normally direct feed them? If so what & how often? I was thinking of cyclo.

One thing that I did notice is that my water became crystal clear within a few hours of putting in the clam. Perhaps its just an illusion? My eyes playing tricks on me?

There's a good chance that clam was harvested for food. 10 live clams sell for $4 in the Philippines. These clams are ripped off the rocks, because there intended for food. Some find there way into the US marked at cheap prices, but have fatal Byssus damage.
Most giant clams come from the Far East, a majority of these countries are poor. And they will still illegally collect them, even if you boycott Petco. What we see at as a pretty pet, collectors in poverty-stricken countries see a way to support there families. JMO

Yeah I Also bought 2 clams from Fishtown and they told me that they only need light to survive, I've had mines for about a month and they're doing great i have a gold maxima and a blue/ purple maxima about 5" each. If you're going to feed it what can feed them?

I learned a lot about clams from yessongs.
at 5" the clam is using light. if you want to feed it the only food for it is phytoplankton, grow your own, or buy a product like DT's. There's a bunch of links for growing your own, search under photoplankton.

how much light do you need to keep a maxima clam? I'm not sure I have enough. I would love to get one. I will have a 2x96 over my 46 bow. Will that be enough?
