help hooking up chilller

I want to set up my JBJ chiller ...but i don't want to add another pump to feed the chiller..how can i hook it up to for my return to feed it..

the chiller is a 1/4 HP JBJ Artica
tank return pump is T4
tank is 120gallon +25 g sump...

What is the min. flow through rate for the chiller and what is your pump rated at?If you have a big enough pump you might be able to tee off your return into the chiller.....

The T4 does about 1200gph
I dont know about the JBJ chiller but if its a freon chiller it should be handle the flow rate.
If its a heat extanger type chiller your gonna want a slower rate through it. T'ing it off would be the best idea.

It says that the jbj is a heat exchanger type chiller but can handle water flow from 500gph-1800gph so looks like you can put that puppy inline no prob.

Melt i'm setting up the same chiller, my return pump is a mag 18. I had to use the bigger pump to compensate for the head loss. It's amazing how much waterflow you lose by the time it gets back to the tank. I think the trick is to stay within their min/max flow rates. Good luck!

The mag 18 is my return pump. It goes to the chiller first and then returns back. Nothing fancy. Right now i think im going to let the chiller run on it's on with out the aquacontroller as the thermostat seems quite accurate.

I would be cautious about running it from your return pump - if your return is rated at 1200 and the JBJ is rated at 1800, then you are OK since you are starting off at lower flow than max on the unit. If you ever upgrade your return, be careful as your chiller is at sump level (assuming) and the pump will not have any headloss at the point of the chiller. my .02

That's a good point House. By the time the water gets to the chiller it already has significant head loss. The maximum flow rate on this chiller is 1920GPH. So a mag 12 or 18 should be suitable. It's definately something to think about with the smaller chillers.

I am really amazed at how quiet this unit is. So far it's very accurate. I'm just going to use the Aquacontroller as a backup safety.

Melt, how did your installation go? I suggest you use a bit of silicone around the hose barb.

thanks for the tip.... i just order a pump..to run the chiller...i decide that I will put two holes in the wall forthe hose and let the chiller sit in a corner of my bedroom..is it that quiet?..where i wanted to put the chiller is a coner next to the tank and the window is on the opposite side so no air will get there., secondly, the fans in the canopy will only pull the hot air off the chiller in the canopy....

The wife have to deal with it or get out!!!!

Since the chiller is next to my tank, i can honestly say that i can't notice that it's on. If you're putting it in the bedroom then i don't know. Remember that it will be real quiet in there. What about the heat from the unit, what are you doing with that? Your room is going to warm up real quick. At night it hardly turns on, so that's a plus!

I only want o use the chiller in the summer and I will have my AC in my room on...or the window open..
