i just completely covered the overflows with another mesh sheet fastened with clips. Nothing will ever get into my overflows again. One issue i see already is my labbouts wrasse getting spooked and jumping into the overflow but NOW getting stuck on top of the netting. i have rescued him before many times with out being bit. I cant win? Please, explain to me why we can spend thousands of dollars on a setup, yet cannot get screen tops or covers for overflows. I don't get it?? Manufacturers: there is a DEMAND!!! SUPPLY us with what we need. FISH jump...its not a secret! Every tank dimension should have a matching screen top... don't get it...
I am with you on this one Thirty. I had an eel who was very well behaved but he grew so big in the tank he always scared me. He was 2 inches in diameter and about 2 foot long. As I was making arrangement for the LFS to sell him for me, I came downstairs one morning to find he had managed to lift the glass cover on the tank and end up on the floor. I was sorry to see him commit suicide, as he was great to feed and watch. He just always freaked me out when I had to do anything in the tank near him. I would definitely go and get a tetanus shot if he broke the skin. When diving, over the years a few people got bit from hand feeding eels on the reef. One developed tetanus as a result of the bacteria they harbor.
my eel is also the perfect reef eel, doesn't bother anything in the tank. He hides all day and night time (2am) he starts to stick his head out from the rocks. When i found him in the state he was in, i had to act NOW. Just another learning experience for a noob.
just wanted to add: skeletor eels dont have teeth, i have looked closely while he had his mouth wide open while a skunk was cleaning. If he had teeth, he'd still be in my overflow.
I had a big moray eel try to take 3 fingers of while swimming in hawaii. I had to go get shots because of the risk of infection and the wounds glued shut. I still have the scars. When I 'adopted' my first tank from my friend who was moving it came with a snowflake moray. The thing scared me having to feed it. However it also managed to escape yet was found on the floor dead
