Ok so I order a 200 gal mix of oceanic salt mix. It should be here with the week now I am going to make up about 44 gals of s/w and do a water change with the new stuff will this be a problem for my 125 gal tank ? Is changeing the salt a big thing ? or if the sal is right than it shouldn't matter ? After the initial change I was going to make up another 44 gals with in the next week or 2 ? Are there any better ways of going about this or should I go as planned ?

As with all new buckets or bags of salt, you should check the cal, alk, mg, and phosphate level to make sure these parameters are in the proper range. If everything tests ok, you should not have a problem.

Steve, you can't go wrong doing it slowly. Just make sure you test your SG, Ca,, Alk & Mg frequently. Your trace elements are going to change at a different rate than with your current brand of salt. As long as you monitor it you should be ok......and, follow Richs' and Jons' recommendations.

some guys mix the 2 (like reefexotics) and get great results. I believe IO is lower in cal and higher in alk than the Oceanic, so the 2 salts blend well.

Rich, this procedure is something I toyed with for awhile. Then I heard about a major crash (someone local) with somebody who prescribed to the exact same philosphy you describe. I obviously cannot say for certain that their system crashed for this reason, but, I cannot discount it either. Bottom line would be, if you do try this method, be very careful and monitor everything closely.
