Canister filter on reef tank

Is it bad to use a canister filter on a reef tank? I see most people use sumps but could you use a canister filter? Thoughts?

canister equals nitrate factory. no oxygen flow through canisters. most will say its a horrible idea. then again im sure alot of people do it with success. personally, i would never...

Ok I just was wondering why most people choose not to. That makes sense.

i never used one, but i know people who have. always an issue with nitrates and phosphates. everyone regret it after they did it and ended up just building a small sump. that way you can fit a skimmer, more flow, and better filtration. simple filter sock, lr, skimmer, optional fuge, and a pump. nice and easy

i have one, no problem. water changes a little more frequent and clean out the filter every 10 days. other then that, it works fine with me. sump though is the way to go if you can have it built or do it yourself.

agreed, canisters can be a nightmare with poor husbandry but so can a sump. if you can fit a sump its the best way to go.

I have one but I only put foam and chemical in it, and I do clean with with my bi-weekly water change. Main filtration are hob refugium with MM and protein skimmer.
