So I have been Hit with the RTN Gremlin, over the last 2 weeks i have been losing on average 1 piece of my SPS a day. It starts at base and happens quick, if it starts at night by morning it will be gone the whole colony. I dose a 2 part ESV with a bubble magus doser. Phos. 0 Nitrate 0 Alk 9.0 Cal 420 Mag 1400,. Double checked most of my levels with a friends test kit and they are all spot on..... The part that drives me crazy is having no reason why this is happening. Started doing a few large water changes and gonna start running carbon.. Please if anyone has any advice please let me know, pulling my hair out of my head and thinking about smashing the whole system and starting over!!!!!!

What you are describing is a true RTN event ---- rapid deterioration of whole colonies in a matter of hours. Raising your Alk. from 9-10 dKH has nothing to do with it. RTN is a bacterial or viral event thought to be connected to Vibrio sp. Why and how it starts is really not well understood and the treatment is generally out of the reach of most aquarists --- chloremphenecol (sp?) has proven effective, but is not available over the counter. I think the best you can do is keep water as pristine and stable as possible. You might also consider adding a UV sterelizer though this certainly isn't a cure.

This is frustratingly one of those "gremlin" events that occur at complex bacterial and biological levels that aren't well understood. Been there, many have, it will disappear, but you will lose your fair share of coral:( I'll try to track down Chris Jury -- our resident coral biologist -- and see if he has anything to add.
Here's a good read that discusses the complexity of the condition:

Philyd1 Im sorry to hear about your tank and those damn gremlins... I just got the last of my sps that were still alive out today and dipped and into my friends QT tank. All I have is 7 fish and some old live rock and some new live rock in the tank... It kills me to look at the tank right now. But I hope to get that rtn crap out of my tank and keep it out....
I do hope you have better luck then I had... I had the same thing go to bed look at the tank and wake up or come home from work and I had some real pretty white sticks with very little skin left..... So I feel for you.

since i have put his stuff in my tank i did not loose one piece.. i dipped every one of his coral in revive.. also i noted some slimy "bacterial" buildup on some.. i cut them off well into the healthy section and so far so good!

Do you use Bio-Pellets?? if so , stop! slowly remove them over the next week and introduce phosban with the adition of vodka/vinigar to replace the "food" for the bacteria that the Bio-Pellets provided.. I had this problem in my system and did this and it pretty much reversed the effects... I think that in a long running system w/o alot of additives you wind up with a Mono-Bacterial system and it allows negative bacteria to form and start to kill off your coral.. (I could be wrong but its my theory) and its worked.. so it cant hurt..

pull your coral dip them, do a 20% waterchange and then do what i said above, if it fits your situation..

hope it helps..

Thank you hopefully i got a hold of this RTN, going on 3 days and no more RTN so lets wait and see, i am going to start using the RED SEA NO3:PO4-X i herd some really good things about it, i guess its similar to Carbon dosing

i love it.i dropped my nitrates from over 25 to under 2 in 2 weeks.lost some color i believe it was from the quick drop.i was dosing 6ml for a 100 gallon of twv per day.i had to stop because im not allowed to carbon dose anymore :(. once you get your trates down though i would stop the everyday dosing to every 3 to 4 days. maybe get some zeobak to get some bacteria in the tank as well
