Does any 1 know anything about these beautiful creatures, i always thought that they are toxic and anything that it cannot tolarate will distroy it and will create chaos in the tank.:batangel:
When disturbed or if they die they can release toxins which could wipe out your tank so they are most definitely not recommended for a reef or community type tank. It is also difficult to meet their dietary needs as well.
No experience with them, just sharing what I've read. I'd steer clear. Might make for a cool nano species tank though.
Filter feeding cucumbers need special placement in a reef tank, when they are happy where they are you will know it. They stay put within the same location and feed almost non stop. They like high current which stimulates the feeding response. I feed my cuc microvert and live phyto.
Had it for about 6 months now.
Sea Apple need to be feed to survie and most aren't and just waste away over time. They should be feed brime shrimp,cyclop-eeze or mysis shrimp.
As for cucumber the ones that are very brightly color then to be more toxic and you should avoid them. Cucumber will eat stuff in your sand bed, some times good stuff, but they're good sand movers and people that have use them with DSB. Before you buy one you should do some research to make sure it's not very toxic as if it dies or stress it can release toxicins into the water and kill off everything in your tank.
It really depends on what skill level you're at. I felt comfortable with keeping this creature only because it was doing really well at the lfs for weeks. Once I took it home and acclimated the cucumber for about 3 hrs it opened up right away.
I also read that they are not as toxic as most people make them out to be, just because it's colorful doesn't neccessarily make them lethal.
If they do really badly in your tank they are just as toxic as any rotting dead organism in your tank.
I not sure it really depends on your skill level as if you get one that is toxic, and since so many different ones come into store all the time your can't alway be sure what you have, it doesn't stop it from being stress out by some thing in your tank or in a lot of situtation some get sucked into overflows or powerhead and they then release all their guts which is a lot of situtations can wipe out a tank.
General the more coloful some thing is the more toxic it will carry. This is a sign to others to leave it alone as it's either poisonous to eat or can release poison. I'm sure there are exceptions but you really need to check them out before you place one into your tank.
As for them being just as toxic as rotting dead organism in your tank that not true. Fish, inverts and coral could all die and outside of an increase in ammonia most wouldn't do any harm in your tank, though there are some fish that can release toxin also. Cucumber on the other hand can release toxins into the water, either when they die or when stress out. When stressed they will spit out their guts which can be very toxic and could possible wipe out everything in your tank.
You do need to be very careful with cucumber as if you do a search on RC you'll find many tank wiped out because a cucumber went or got sucked into an overflow.
i have had sea cucumbers before. they are very easy to care for . just watch you pump intakes. had mine for a few years. then traded it to a friend who sill has it.. only reason i got rid of it was due to a carpet anmone.

I really do think that skill level has alot to do with keeping a sea cucumber happy. If you choose its tank mates carefully and place it where it will get good flow it will not wander from the sweet spot.
Mine has not moved much from where I placed it 6 months ago!
Other than that they are extremely easy to care for animals.
