moldy nu clear filter

i have a nu clear filter that i use once in a blue moon. well it must not have dried out well last time i used it. there is some mold on the top and bottom rubber part of the filter and a sulfur smell in the canister. the smell is gone now that i washed it and i got the mold off the filter as well, do you think it is safe to use on my reef tank now? there does not appear to be mold in the paper part of the filter at all.
