So i want to switch over where i have bioballs to a refugium. I have never set one up and don't really know where to begin.
Now i currently have the bio balls in the middle chamber is pulling them out now a bad idea? My tank has been running for 8-9 months.

Thanks for your help MR as always

The ideal thing to do, as I have witnessed this firsthand being that I have maintained a Biocube for two years now and we also have one set up at the pet shop I currently work for is to replace the bioballs which can be nitrate traps and incorporate live rock rubble in place of them. This provides added surface area for bacteria to grow, ultimately leading to better water parameters! You can also add chaeto into your aquarium where you already have light.

I think the live rock i have will be enough, so im just looking to add the fuge and find out what should i use in it Chaeto or Macro

Don't remove all the bio balls at once this could lead to a system crash trust me.. Do it periodically little by little over a few months until you completely wean your system off the bio balls

Thanks good idea! I have them separated into 3 different bags so I guess ill remove a bag a month to be on the safe side.

i would take them all out ....it wont crash the system.....if you have a 14 gallon then you should be use to doing water changes.take them all out add the chaeto get the jbj nano light and also get yourself a timer for that light and have it setup to come on when your main lights go off that way your PH wont fluctuate.....oh and do weekly water changes!!!!
