With summer's heat coming soon, replacing daily water loss due to evaporation can be a source of a headache for many reefers. What method(s) do you use to combat water loss?

I have a pressure switch that is connected to a pump in my 55g RO/DI water container that pumps fresh water into my sump when I keep the button depressed (water line runs above the ceiling tiles). My basement has central AC so the most I lose in a day on my ~180g system is a couple of gallons. I just made the replace fresh water by hand process a little easier without making the system fully automated. :)

Keeping my fingers crossd - I use a home made float switch setup.
So far it has worked flawlessly for almost 2 years.
Thinking about adding 2 more float switches for safety.

By hand for now ,Summer time i just up the level of the water in the sump so ill have a better chance not letting the pump run dry

Thinking about getting a ATO but for now by hand

I use an 11 gallon Nurce (Aqualan) topoff tank. It's a gravity/siphon system. Assuming that Romain (last post) has the same thing. Yes, they are no longer in business. There site still lives though. http://www.aqualan.com/ I know that some people have made DIY versions.

Exactly NURCE it's the name. Mine is 8 gallon I think and lasts approx a week for the 50 gallon tank. Glad to know you have the same ATO setup.

Two systems, two methods for me. I have a float switch on my 75. Nice and easy setup. No worries.
My 16 is a little more worrisome. I don't run a sump or fuge on this tank. I'm a little nervous about a float switch in the display. I will probably try it with redundencies built in. I currently have a 6 gallon, covered bucket behind the 16g with RO/DI water in it. I have a pump and heater in the bucket. The pump is attached to a toggle switch, so I don't technically topoff daily by bucket, all I do is flip the switch till it's at the required level. But I do have to fill the 6g container every couple of weeks.

I use a float switch, wich pumps limewater into the system. Has worked effectively for about five years.

In my experience, I lose a whole lot more water to evaporation during the winter then in the summer. The dry winter air pulls alot more water out of my system, then the hot humid summer air.

Litermeter 3 siphoning from a 20g rubbermaid (which is tubed to my RO unit) placed in a utility room. The L3 tops off my 120g + 102g setup and a second remote pump tops off my separate 90g that is in the same room.
Medical doser to top off my JBJ nano-cube.

None of these systems utilizes float switches. I just adjust the liters or mililiters to compensate for overall humidity which changes the evaporation rates.

Yeah, my 11 gallon model lasts about a week for my 90 but less in the summer. I found it on E-bay a few years ago reasonably cheap and it's one of my favorite pieces of equipment. No pump, switch or timers needed.

Using a DIY rig from floatswitches.net. I have a 2nd float wired as a fail-safe and it has already saved my a$$! Some carbon granules escaped from a bag and jammed up my 1st float valve. I think I'm gonna use Russ's idea with the timer as a secondary fail-safe.
