tank cycle?

just curious about something. Set my new 125 up 2 weekends ago and did a reading today and all the readings were zero. Used about 100-200lbs of LR straight from a friends tank.

question is- can such a large volume of water cycle that fast w/ so much LR?

was the rock cured in your friends tank ,If so it should of cycled at all ,unless you had die off ..and if you had very little dies off then yes it could cycle in 2 weeks

I bought my LR for my selling tank rightout of someones tank ,it never cycles or anytime of spike ,put corals in the next week just to be on the safe side

If the LR was cured already you mayn't have much if any die off. So it is possible to cycle that fast and actually some people don't even see any increase in ammonia as the LR that they use is completely cured.

yea, it was in his tank for a long time, he was taking it down and i pickeed it up and placed it in my tank

just curious, cause i've seen no trace of anything...and i'm dying to buy fish again

Actually, there is no need for a cycle if the rock was all cured and wasn't left out of water for long. When I switched from a 55 to a 90 gallon a few years back I used 100% new water and just moved the rock over from the 55 to the 90 along with adding another 40 lbs of LFS cured rock. No cycle necessary.

Since the LR has been in the tank for 2 weeks you would have seen some ammonia spike by this time. So it's pretty safe to say that the tank is ready to go. I would try it with one fish or invert and see how it does before adding a lot of things.

i had inverts since day one- hitchhickers on the rock, tons of feather dusters too.... just added a green wolf eel last nite (its nasty, love it)

since i think its cycled, i'm going to move to a fish next week and see how that works out

If you had all that in from day 1 your tank is cycle otherwise you would have had some die off.

A Green Wolf Eel is a very interesting and active fish, just watch what small fish you place in the tank with it and they're pretty aggressive.

Marrone - i love the eel, hes much much more active then my old snowflake, only thing is he's picking w/ food- gave him some clam and he just nips at it, didnt even finish the peice i gave him... got any info or exp to share?

Coralcrazy- i just do some serivce work for aquarium- my 125 is a beast i'll get pics soon once i get some fish in it. I got the rock from a friend, not that store-- lucky for me, my parents are amazed by saltwater

The Green Wolf Eel isn't an eel at all, it was listed as a Blenny but now it's listed with the Dottybacks, unless they changed it again. They do get to be a good size, about 1 1/2 feet, and are very aggressive. So be careful with small fish. They have been breed so if you can get a male & female you may have a go at it. And like all eel or Dottybacks they will jump out of the tank so you need to make sure the top is sealed good.

I would try feeding it small pieces of shrimp or small silver sides.

he's going to be housed w/ some pretty big triggers. so i'm assuming he'll get beat andnotbe 2 overly agressive. i'l try a silverside tomorrow- i gave him some clam today
