I'm currently starting my new tank. It's gonna be a 90 gal mixed reef. That said what is the opinion on pellets. Ive read that you should not start a tank with them as they need both phosphate and nitrates present to work. What the opinions on going with pellets. Also if I decide to run pellets then I guess GFO is not needed. What about a refugium. Is that not need as well. Do the pellets take over for those forms of nutrient removal? Thanks in advance.

It's true it needs phosphates and nitrates to start feeding the bacteria. So it's better to add it after your tank has cycled and u have some livestock in the tank for a few weeks before starting the reactor. Pellets r good at maintaining your nitrates very low. But it's not a replacement for a refugium. IMO u should still run a GFO reactor the pellets r not that great on removing phosphates.

imo bio pellets should remove nirtares and phosphates both if you want to remove nitrates only then go with diy nitrage reactor i have made mine with ceap calcium reactor filled with sulfer media and calcium media my nitrates are 0 and phosohate are 0.03 with hanna tester once i am done building my recirculating bio pallet reactor i will remove nitrate reactor.
