crazy idea or dont do it!?

Ok so I'm looking in my tank, well the over flow part. Could I put aragonite sand in the back to have a deeper sand bed or that a crazy idea. And I only have a 1" in the display tank, about 3" in refugium.

If you don't want to see into the overflow box. You can always paint the side of your tank where the overflow box is black.
