Depending on the height of your stand and if your sump is in your stand or not.... then most people don't put in 75's or 55's because they're too tall.

If it's in your stand and you have a standard stand height, then I'd say to go with a 65 long. They can be hard to find but worth it.

They're 48x18x18".

A 75 and a 55 I believe are 22" tall.

Usually in 4' stands, it is impossible to install a 4' sump or do you have a custom stand?

i guess it depends on how much room you need for equip. size of fuge area would be based on section for skimmer if internal, and pump if internal. if external pump i would think it could work: not going to be large fuge area, but im not sure it needs to be. Someone else will chime in im sure. would a hob fuge work? maybe take a aquaclear filter and transform it to a fuge?

I think the 40 is too small to be a sump and fuge. It would be an ok sump or fuge but not both, not enough room.
I have a 75 under my 150 same size as your tank. It has a good sized skimmer, ATO, GFO reactor and a 25 gallon fuge section and it is cramped.
What other tank or container could you put next to the sump that would make a good fuge?

May go with the 75 gallon tank. skimmer i have is a asm g4. so i would need at least 12 inchs in first chamber. I am running two mag pumps a mag 9 and a mag 7 for my tank and chiller.they don't take up two much room, but i heard the return chamber cant be two small.only other equipent i need to fit in is my heater which is about 16 inches long may have to put that in refugium area.

i dont think you would have the room with the mag pumps as you would want a bigger return section. i would do an additional fuge and attach somehow: hob or tie it into sump if can do the large sump tank. i am using a 60 for mine, with external pump and my fuge section is still on the small side

bottom line is that any fuge regardless of proper sizing has more benefits than no fuge IMO. I would attempt to make it as large as possible however. The more volume you have with the light over it will help to stabilize your Ph when your DT lights are off.

If you want to or have no choice but to have a small return section than that can be done too if you have an ATO and then it isn't a concern.

Are you sure that a 75 isn't going to be too tall under your stand witha n in-sump skimmer? Can you fit a 48" sump in your stand which is also 48"?

I like Ecosystems and ADHI refugiums. They've done well for me. Take a look at them and other "factory made" fuges/sumps and get an idea as to how you would like to set it up. Just make sure you have slow flow going thru them.

You can also look at fuges made by MRC that have a section for the socks/skimmer that overflow into the return section. A seperate tiny pump like a maxi-jet pushes water from the sock/skimmer section into the fuge section very slowly so that it can overflow into the return section as well. This design allows for a slow flow fuge and a higher flow sump. You can also get around using a small pump by splitting the drains and regulating it with a pair of ball valves. You'll still have 2 drains going into your socks but one drain will have a ball valve that is slightly closed and a "tee" so water will flow into the fuge eliminating a need for a pump.
