diving certificate ?

i was just wondering...

i'm going to LA this summer and i'm planning to go scuba diving for the 1st time...
done a little research and people said you need to get certified OPEN WATER...

wondering if you can do that here... instead of wasting vacation time... if you can? where around new york

If you are from queens there is this place in flushing called "diving duck". They offer certification and diving trips.

Or Scuba Zone (sp?) on 6th Ave and 19th st.

You can do everything in the pool except the open water dives. But you can get a referal so you do this last test dive on your vacation.

Pan Aqua was where Missy and I went they have a number of locations in the city and the training was great. We did our open water dives in Florida but the classroom training really prepared us.

since i'm practically no nothing about scuba...
what exactly is done in these classes?

oh do any of these have websites ?

Check out PADI or NAUI for info on Open Water Diving certifications.

I recommend PADI simply because it is a bigger organization.

I logged many dives in Los Angeles area, just be warned the water is COLD!! You will need to wear a thick wet suit and lots of weights too. Not much to see other than kelp beds, unless you go down to San Diego and get on a boat to Mexican waters. You can see some fish and lots of sea lions, no corals at all. IMO, LA is not a good place to do you first few open water dives.

There is a place on Old Country Road, close to Roosevelt Fields mall call Scuba Networks. I talked to them a few times about doing some off shore wreck dives and they seen to be a nice bunch people.

They are PADI but when Missy and I went to do our open water dive we did Naui for our certification. It requires a little more work in the open water then Padi does but basically the exact same thing.
