For some time i've wanted to build a saltwater tank for a school. Luckily i'm not impulsive and didn't because a year or so ago my tank crashed due to improper care taking by a tanksitter. Needless to say it set me back, but i'm in full swing again.
That said i wanted to build a tank for young people who cannot afford one in the home and on the whole are not taught very much as far as marine biology and our relationship/dependence with/upon it. So of course in true Reef enthusiast fashion i had to lend my armchair expertise.:fight2:
I was going to foot the bill myself, but came across a M.R. member who was selling a 70gallon oceanic tek(i think) tank. i let him know i would basically have to lowball him and after a short discussion he donated the tank sump, return pump and sand. i showed up with tax write off in hand and step one is complete.
i'll make a build thread maybe but i'm starting off as fish only or maybe F.O.W.L.R. As there are crazy variable in temperature ect initially.i'm not if a build for a fish only would be interesting.lol
Anyway i'll update as i go if people are interested. i appreciate advice and opinions that's how one learns in life.See you guys soon!!

OH!! also,if anyone has any relevant items laying around it will speed up the building process as otherwise it will be check to check more or less.still need liverock, dry rock, coral decorations ,pumps, salt, testkits, lights(i may go for cheap 36inchLed or halides as the kids will love the shimmer and the school handles electic bill.LOL) back up return pump-you name it.lol you guys already know the drill.i can supply tax write off when i pick up if wanted. thanks for reading and keep up the good work! (sorry for the long post)

Where/what level is the school and what is your relationship to it? I did this same thing for a public elementary school for 4-5 years and can no doubt offer some advice.

Also MR member James is currently setting up a marine system in his public middle school, so you might want to dialogue with him.

It is an amzing thing to do for the kids. It is doable under the right circumstances, but it is A TON of work.

it's middle school/highschool and i work there so i get to monitor the tank fairly frequently. I already built a a few freshwater systems, one being an african cichlid tank,so i can respect the amount of work this will be.lol.I still want to get around to seeing the Prettreef...reef. i believe i may know the james that is building the system,i'll definitely check.
