Give hell to who? This is a direct result of the disastrous (IMO) budget sequester imposed by Congress. I'll leave it to you all individually to sort out for yourselves who's fault that is. I recommend not answering this question in the thread or it will be shut down very fast. The point is, there is no one to complain to directly.

I dont see where we come to the conclusion that the prices of corals and fish are going up because of this, in Fact weekday shipments are about $200 cheaper than weekend shipments .
What I do see is business's will be seriously hurt from this.. , Weekend shoppers is what keeps LFS in business if new stock is only coming in on weekdays now, well , They will lose those clients that came in ever weekend. And probably won't make it during the week
I know I wont be shopping on weekends as much anymore. and In fact I dont have the time during the weekdays to go shopping. So by sunday all those nice pieces will be gone. This Stinks!!

The prices are likely to go up because there are far fewer flights that meet the time requirements and freight on those flights is limited. Price for that freight is going to increase accordingly. It is also going to make it more difficult for small transhippers to find freight space and they are the ones who sell at the bottom of the market.

Simple "Supply and Demand". Like said above, less available transport vessels. Less freight being delivered = less product availability =higher rates by shipping companies to balance lost extra revenue = higher prices for consumers.
Government better figure it out...soon.

is it me or doesnt anybody appreciate the fact that the better stores hold stock for a few days to acclimate and ascertain if the product is in healty condition to sell? I personally have never had good results with right out the box from a LFS. Some of the places accually refuse to sell but will hold with payment until its ready to go. Or you tell the LFS what you are looking for and as long as you dont flake it will be there ready and waiting. They call, email, and post on all the sites whats in, whats comming in and what might come in on a regular basis. My email is full from all the places I shop. So fellas whats the rush? LFS will get deliveries during the week and still have sale items on weekends. This is all being blown out of proportion. Maybe Im wrong?

There are 2 separate issues you are conflating. I totally agree about holding livestock/ buying right out of the bag etc. This part to me is a non-issue, the real concern is exporters/importers being able to get freight on flights that land at appropriate times. My understanding is that this is no small issue. Flights are also delayed all the time and if this happens the the shipments will simply sit unattended until the right time. This costs lives and money. Smaller importers who can't absorb the increase in costs could cease to operate. All these things have potential ramifications for the industry. Focusing on not being able to buy freshly landed coral on the weekend is missing the point IMO.

Thanks for explaining that in details. I was unaware of that part of the whole thing.

Yes you are correct, The proper methods are never taken. Fish for instance should never be sold the same day as received , Where I help out we never sell fish the same day, They would die .. Corals on the other hand dont have the issue where the PH drops in the bag,Its better to discard the old water and put the corals in fresh clean water,
So selling corals the same day, Is not that bad.. minus that fact of pests you might have, which I strongly recommend personal practice of QTing ,You should never take someone else's word , DIP DIP DIP>>
I dont know a single shop nor a single distributor thats holds there live stock for 3 weeks. Maybe there's a few shops out there im not aware of. But Corals should be temp acclimated and then added to clean water, Then sent in a qt system for 3 weeks and dipped. ( I know no one that dose that practice )
Now as far as shipments going up in price, air cargo hasn't slowed down, If you own a restaurant, ECT.. you can still get cargo on sunday's, US customs is not closing for the weekend's its just fish and wild life , As I said in fact its cheaper on weekdays to get shipments you dont have to pay overtime fees to the fish and wildlife.

as randy stated, it's the booking of space issue. most necessities (food, medical supply, wearing apparel, etc.) will get priority space. unless you pay a higher premium, livestock will get bumped. besides, without FWS clearance, CBP won't even look at your entry. in the end, it won't be cheaper. it's a snowball effect - there are no winners in this situation. perishables will always have priority, but without overtime & weekend clearances, this creates more delays and expense down the food chain. even the trucker's who worked weekends will have to work longer shifts during the week or not have as many deliveries = less income. most consumers don't understand the logistics of dealing with the govt & transport - they're just happy to see the products on the shelf. i hope that whatever livestock that arrives in the near future survives their ordeal . happy reefing!
