Hello all,
I've been reading all I can about reef aquariums for the past few months and think that I am ready to take the plunge.
Can someone recomend a builder for an aprox. 250 gal. acrylic tank
TIA !

Where do you live? 1,000 Island in Brooklyn is good, but I highly suggest that you "babysit" them during the build to make sure you get exactly what you want. They tend to do more of what they want to do, rather than what you want them to do. Guys here also order from glass cages, but I'm not sure they do acrylic.
Since it's going to come up anyway, I figured I would just let you know that most people who run reefs stay away from acrylic. It scratches way too easily and coralline algae will grow all over the acrylic and be difficult to remove without scratching. I'm not trying to discourage you from getting acrylic, afterall, anyhting can be done, but most here go glass for reefs.

I have a Tenecor acrylic. It is extremely well made.

That being said, I would NEVER own another acrylic tank again (unless it was a sump or fuge). You will find others on this board, and elsewhere, that say it's great and love it. However, as meticulous as you might be, the odds are stacked that the tank will get scratched.

Oh, btw, did I say I would NEVER own another acrylic tank?

Good luck whichever way you decide to go.

Did I mention that this was going to come up anyway? But I have to agree 100% with the posts above. I think you will appreciate their reinforcement.

thank you all for your responses..
the reason I am going acrylic is I have an active 3yo son(and another on the way)..having a large glass tank in my livingroom makes me too nervous.
is my fear founded?

Tough call. I'm sure your wife would ring his neck if he were to throw hard objects around the house if there was a fish tank there or not.
Are you concerned of a catastrophic failure of an entire pane of glass? Never seen that one before. Many members here have kids and are better suited to answer such questions. Personally, I have no kids, but I do think you may be worrying too much.

If you are set on an acrylic tank, go for an Envision, socalcreations.com also can build them. Ask for 1" thick side walls if you will allow your kids throwing things at it.

Don't bother with reef exotics, Tony can save you a few dollars on a Aquarium Obsessed tank but the builder is a big time lier and you won't get exactly what you asked for. Tony won't go out of his way to help you resolve the problem either, a buddy of my just went thru this and wasted two months with them.

The best glass tanks I have seen are from Interamerican (I own one) and Miracle in glass, both are from Canada. You can also try to order a glasscages tank if you send them a drawing of exactly what you want and hope the guy knows how to read it, sometimes it comes out okay, sometimes it does not. They are the cheapest place to get glass tanks from, if you can get over the quality issue.

I have a Clarity Plus tank, got it from a web salesman that was a direct seller for Clarity Plus. I also made contact with socalcreations.com but didn't buy from them, the other place could get me the tank faster. Actually there aren't, atleast when I purchased my tank, a lot of places that build large acrylic tanks. I'm not sure you need to go an 1" as 3/4" should do.

Also if you buy a tank that size, and the stand also, you should ask for free shipping to your door.

If you're worried about scratches, on an acrylic tank, you can also scratch glass tanks. Unlike acrylic you can't take out the scratches on glass tanks. They're are many people here on the board with scratched glass tanks.
