Curing rock

I never had to cure rock before but I bought some live rock from a member and the rock was left in buckets over night so when I got them they didn't smell pretty good so I decided to put them in a brute with some salt water in the basement and now it reeeeeks Lmao. I have 20 gallons of water in the brute with a heater and power head in the dark. I did a 5 gallon water change just now. How long before all the dead matter comes off and the stink to go away LOL. My wife is getting p!ssed off

Two to three months. Put it out in the garage.

It could take awhile, more than a month. Put a mesh bag with carbon in the water and cover it with a lid, that should help.

If you have an old skimmer, you could put that in, too. Also, increase the water changes to 50%, 2 x's per week or more. GLWS (good luck with smell!)

I assume this was from someone's tank. If that is true it shouldn't take that long. After a few days take a stiff brush and brush all the rock. Then replace most of the water. May have to do this a second time. If you have another tank going and you do a water change you can use that water since it will have the benefit of some bacteria in it. And I agree, it belongs in the garage.
