SCWD, they run about $39 and they're great. I"ve read that most of the power strip type wave makers can burn out your pumps. I've used the SCWD and I like it.
Depending on how much you want to spend, the AC Jr can be had with temp and ph probes, as well as a hardwired 8 outlet control strip for less than $300. It is programble to work as a wavemaker and so much more.
The SCWD is a good option for little money. You need a strong return pump.
The Reefkeeper uses a technology that they call "soft start" which is supposed to lesson the wear of electronic wavemakers. They do add in a disclaimer that their wavemaker function will wear out your pumps though.
The SCWD can be run on anything from 50 GPH to 1400 GPH.
Personally I don't like wave makers. If you take two pumps and mount them at the surface on the sides of your tank pointing at each other you will create random turbulant flow with a minimal of dead spots. Being that what we want is random turbulant flow and a good amount of it, why would you want to turn your pumps off some of the time even if for only a few seconds? I say leave them on at full blast and use them for all they're worth! If you point the pumps at each other you'll find your corals exibit a bobbing "wave like" motion anyway.
Fritz, better buy another SCWD as back up, because you'll need it if a few months:lol2:
scwd is a waste of electricity, it robs too much flow for what it does. Look into Oceans Motions Squirt if you want a "switching" device to work with a pump. The other device I found pretty decent is a SeaSwirl.
Go with a Tunze stream controlled by a single controller if you want a pump that pulses the water. Pretty much all other devices that switches a powerhead on and off will wear out the pump prematurely.
I had 4 maxijets (1200,1200,600,400) on a Blueline Tsunami wave maker for 2 years. It never burned out a pump.
and for $12 I would have just bought a new one. If you figure $12 over 2 years that's 50cents a month. Cheap when you add it into everything else you spend on your tank.
On my new tank I'm getting an aquacontroller JR so I'll probably be selling my old wavemaker.
