how to use avatar photo?

I've noticed people using avatar photos, how does one do this? I'm navigating around and don't see a link/option for it.

Click on http://www.manhattanreefs.com/forum/profile.php?do=editprofile and on the left side of the screen should be Edit Avatar.

Thanks, had the assumption you can't upload pics if your a new member.

Yes, I think that's the case for new members until they've gotten a few posts under their belt.
