ATO Water Container Options

Hey guys,

I'm looking at my options for ATO water containers. How do we determine if plastics are safe for this function? I'm currently looking at this item by Sterilite:

I'm looking for a container that will hold around 10 gallons. What do you use for your ATO container? I don't have space in my apartment for large barrels.

Why not just use a 10gal tank or 20gal if you like. They will tank up less space that almost and Rubbermaid storage container or the like. And you won't have to worry if it's safe.

My tank is 57g and i go through about a gallon a day. I just purchased a Tunze ATO pump and it is working out nicely. My needs are a mixture of the following:

SIZE - I have a space beside my stand that I would like to place the RO water container. The link that I posted to the online Sterilite at Target is actually too big, but there is a smaller container at the store that is the perfect size.
SAFETY - I obviously want it to be safe and not contaminate my water
COVER - to keep dog hair out
LOOKS - i'd like it to look nice. My tank is in my office so the container posted looks like others I have in my office.

Since it appears to be safe for my purposes, I will go with the container that i saw in the store. I looked into the Brute containers at Home Depot today after reading Widdy's suggestion and it is just too big.

One other idea I had was to purchase a storage ottoman. I could line it with a plastic bag to make it water proof (assuming the bag is food safe) but the ottomans I looked at all appear to provide minimal support and I'm thinking it would bow from the water pressure.

Does anyone know about this method?

i would do a glass tank and you can make yourself a plastic cover to keep contaminants out of the rodi water. Ive always used a glass tank and you can't go wrong with it...

the Rubbermaid containers are soft and though I use them temporarily during vacations, I have seen cracked ones that people throw out. What you need is a rigid container, like the 5 gallon water bottles (the wide 6" mouth that are washable). These guys and drop off a truck and bounce rather than shatter. OR the 5 gallon orange bucket from homedepot.

I've looked on Craigslist, Home Depot, Target and various Internet sites for 5g water bottles. Where can I buy one of these? A water bottle like the Culligan bottles was another option for me.

go to home depot buy a 5 gallon bottle of water, use the water and keep the bottle

Not sure what the problem is with your original plan. Since the product is food safe and they claim no bpa and all that jazz...i use a sterilite container also and never had an issue.

+1 get a 10 gal tank looks neat and you can buy a glass canopy of $10 to keep dog hair out.

I my self are looking for other options. I currently have a 6 gallon ato looking to go bigger . I might have to make a custom one. My space is L 14 x W 14 x H 17. I have a sheet Of what I think is plexi glass. Does anyone know if weld on works with plexi and not just acrylic?

Following along...I am using a 2.5g Nutra-Sea water jug inside the cabinet for ATO. Unfortunately it needs to be refilled twice a week. So I'm looking for something that is at least 6g+ that will also fit inside the cabinet. But it needs to fit in a tiny 8"x12" area. Height can be as much as 24". I've been searching for such a container for some time now, but found nothing.
When CK starts to build again I will contact him to make a custom one to fit my needs. Until then, its a PIA to refill the 2.5g, especially when I go away for the week.

I use a Mr. Aqua 7.5 gal tank for top off (12x12x12) I believe. Evaporation is about a gallon a day, so every 5 or 6 days I fill up using a 5 gallon salt bucket.
