Mag 5 strong enough for 110 Gallon?

Hey Everyone,

My cousin will be setting up a 110 soon and was thinking of reusing his mag5 that he had for his 65 gallon. The pump would be use as a return pump however I feel with the extra height especially since its a 30 inch tall tank plus another 30 with the stand it will be too weak.

What size pump do you recommend he use?

Not even close. Look into eheim pumps or a mag 9 to 12

I'm using a mag 5 on my 125.... I think it's enough, you want your water going trough your sump slow so that you give your skimmer a chance to pick up all that junk.

An Eheim 1260 would work great. If you plan on feeding other things with the pump get the 1262. These are the most reliable pumps in the hobby.

Interesting, how tall is your tank? Could be it might just be that his tank is too tall.

The 125 I think is 20inch high plus another 8-10 for my sump. My sump isn't sitting on the floor it's on a stand as we'll.

You want it to be just around 10x gph per gallon of water. So a pump pushing 1200 gph maybe a little less would be good for that setup
