Today I purchased an Anthias, it wasn't labeled, but I'm pretty sure it is a Disbar. I floated it and acclimated it, as I've done with every fish I've ever had. Once it swam out into the tank, it went for the bottom of the tank, crammed itself next to a large base rock for about 5 minutes, then it swam into the rockwork and disappeared. Coincidentally, the other fish never noticed it while it spent its time out on the bottom. So it's not like it was scared into hiding. I know fish can be shy upon introduction, but all my other fish have never disappeared like this. The fish didn't seem too awfully happy and its breathing was somewhat elevated and this is what concerns me. Maybe I'm paranoid and tomorrow morning I will see it cautiously swimming in the tank, but for some reason, I just can't help but be a little worried. Any comments or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

Dispars are a shy and peaceful species of Anthias and tend to do better in groups. So without any other open water peaceful species of Anthias to shoal with hiding in the rocks is not unusual especially at first. I would consider getting a few more, but try feeding small meaty foods to try and coax it out....

That's what I was hoping to hear. I've heard mixed things about keeping these fish in groups... very differing opinions. I was hoping to keep a minimum of 2-3, as long as they'd be happy being kept in multiples. The LFS I got it from is pretty pricey and I paid $40 for it. I was just worried with its behavior and that it disappeared completely.

I can see the fish... It's under a base rock, on the sandbed, with its head by a hole, so it can see out. All it's doing is looking around. I hope it comes out soon. I will be getting a sailfin anthias to keep it company on the next few days.

My experience with Anthias is they behave much like your new arrival. But you need to be sure he eats or he will not survive.

I usually start new Anthias on live Brine Shrimp. Its not the most nutritious but it helps until they adjust to their new home.

Good luck.

Well, he made a few appearances today. Not for too long, but he did come out. I got a second anthias to keep him company, but as he did, the second anthias has disappeared instantly, upon introduction.

They should be alright man. When I got my anthais I introduced 3 at the same time so they can shoal and etc.. They always stayed together and they do hide in the rocks, however after a few days one of them died and the other two I still have to this day and they do not leave eachothers sides. If they do not eat though and hide that will be a problem. Don't stress it for now
