Noticed some dark gray patches under my sand. Scared it?s that toxic hydrogen sulfide (I think) I?ve read about. The tank is a 40B with about 4 Nessarius snails and a diamond goby who stirs up the sand so I?m hoping they?ve been doing a good job.
Hard to see. Looks a bit green in pics. How long have you had it? Are those bristle worms in that area? If so, then it?s most likely not h2s. To be sure you could try making a ?sand core? using a small airline tube or a very thin glass vial, just need a small sample above the dark patch. The smell would give it away...and easier to distinguish colors without aquarium lights.
Ive had this tank two years. Haven?t really seen bristle worms but I have lot of spaghetti worms In there. The color is definitely dark grey in color. In the last picture the top half dark layer I think shows the color best and yea in the picture the bottom half looks green but in reality it?s alll the same color. Thank you or the advice
Its just diatoms or algae growing on the glass which gets light. perfectly normal and doesn't extend past where the light penatrates, but if it bothers you, the solution is to tape over the glass of the DSB and block out all light.
Well if it?s safe then I?ll let it be. Don?t care for it. I was scared it was toxic stuff. And if this is a deep sand issue then this is my gobys fault. My diamond goby removes all the sand from the front of his burrow which is on the right side and brings it to the left side which makes my sand layer thicker that the right side lol
