I ran a 90 gal tank like this for years. Corals grow like crazy. I got tired of the large frequent water changes.

They can, they don?t directly leach nitrates but the bacteria in your system converts it into nitrates (in a healthy system)

The rock has been in your system for over 10 years or you purchased a system that it was in for over 10 years

How long is this latest setup running for

If no amonia phosphate nitrite then i would say its a feeding thing and you are not removing extra nutrients from the water, mechanically (skimmer etc) and organically (algea)

Not switching out media or filter socks can also do it

I?ve had the rocks live for over 10 years- from downgrades to upgrades. I?ve only started to run carbon and rowaphos the past 2 months. The rowaphos and the water changes is probably why my phosphates are low.

This current setup is probably about 2-3 months now (upgrade from a 60 gallon).

10 years is a long time what kind of rock is it

2-3 months you probably have die off on the rocks

Did you ever add bacteria to your system

Gfo is a bandaid not a good long term solution unless you want to continue adding it until you take this setup down

Carbon should be swapped out every two weeks you dont need it running all the time two weeks on two weeks off is what i would recommend unless you have something the you need to remove from the water ie
chemicals you used to treat your tank
If your tank is leaching anything else
Anemone die
Cucumber die
Other poisonous thing die

Not sure what kind of rocks- they?re all different.

I only ran carbon and rowaphos for peace of mind lol.

Nothing died during the transfer. Never added bacteria.

I mean I think EVERYTHING we do with our tank is a bandaid since we?ll never reach that stability without dosing...

If you wait few more weeks , i may sale one of my Denitrification Filter ( Sulfur media) i give up on Chaetto Macro Algae i control the Nitrate using (home made) Sulfur filter.
I got a way better color on my SPS whit OUT Macro Algae.
I use to have close to 50 ppm Nitrate, i made 2 filters, i drop it to 8 ppm in few weeks, i like 2 to 5 pm, i may got rid of one filter.
