Moved my tank this weekend :( what a pain, even though it is only 16g!!!

I failed to find the mantis shrimp - I am hoping he died during the move. If he is still in my rocks I have no idea how I did not find him - i literally took each piece of rock in my tank and dipped them in RO/DI water for a min. I'm sure I killed off a ton of life doing that - but I've been desperate!!! Anyway, he failed to make the jump out of the rock, I had been hoping to get him to pop out of his lair.

Nope - if he is still in there, he's still in hiding  .

The tank looks like a mess now - I am hoping I don't lose too many corals. I kept a little over half of my original tank water and then used new Catalina saltwater I bought over at New World.

I love my new layout - it gives me a lot more room for things to spread out.

Will post new pics of my tank once everything settles down!

interesting, did you see him right before the move??

i guess transporting my 120g and 40br when i move in a month or two, won't be a walk in the park.

Have fun.:lol_large We moved my 120g., 75g. in February,2006 it took 7 hrs., and all the idiot did was dump everything back into the tanks, oh yeah a break the stand to the 120. All I can tell you is DON'T hire James from Bob's Tropical on Myrtle Ave.:banghead: But then again, I know your smarter then that.:D

ugh - my 16g was annoying enough!

I really hope things start to come around - I am really really worried about my coral.

If I see the mantis again I will be using that chemical that kills crabs etc - what is that called again? I need to make sure he is gone before I start feeding him again with a fresh supply of snails and hermits!

it's not that difficult as long as you plan it well and have some extra hands.

1- bag the corals and fish
2- put LR and some water in large rubbermaid bins
3- drain the rest of the tank water into buckets
4- put the tank w/ sand bed untouched on dollys and roll away

thats what I did - kept an inch or two of water on the sand bed. I would also recommend getting pre-made salt water, so you don't need to spend the time making it when you get moved in.

You want to keep at least 25% or so of the original tank water so you don't go through a cycle again!

I know scarf, but I had had surgery 1/31/06, so doing anything on 2/16/06 was out of the question for me.
Reefer, I hope its not in your system anymore. I had heard that the way to get rid of unwanted critters was to soak the lr in high salinity. Supposedly this drives them all out of the lr. Don't know if this is true or not. I've never done it. I was very lucky upto now. Now I'm probably going to be fighting aiptasia from my girlfriends rocks. Hopefully not..

My mantis actually had a door for his hiding spot. he'd crawl in and roll the rock to cover the hole. SO the fact that you ddidn't find your mantis doesn't supprise me.

Did you try the soda water trick while the rocks were out of the tank?

guys the water does not have anything to do with the cycle.
the bacteria you want to save is in the rocks, which Ryan killed with the RO water. old water will help your creatures as it will be what they are used to.
if you kill the bacteria in the rocks you will have small cycle to contend with.

Scarf, are you moving all those tanks in your sig.? All of the above sounds good except for #4. I always had the understanding that you don't move a tank with water (not even a little)in it because it would stress the joints. I don't know if the same goes for the sand. Besides, who's going to pick up the tanks to slip the dollys under it?:sgrin: And are you moving across the hall? I don't think the lr has to be in water as long as they stay wet, and you move fast. Wrap them in wet newspapers. Take as much of the water as you can. And have lots of towels on hand. Good luck.:cheekkiss

i'm only moving the saltwater tanks. the freshies stay where they are(church). i don't worry about moving the tank w/ sand or a little bit of water. nice and slow will do the trick. the 120 w/ sand is heavy but doable.

if i can move the rocks in rubbermaids w/ water i rather do that than wrap them in paper.

I think you were thinking of the interceptor to kill the mantis. How about hyposalinity?

At 1 minute, this isn't enough to kill most of the bacteria on the rock, just the surface.

Good luck with the mantis, you might want to tackle it now rather than down the road when everything is settled!

well we will see - i am hoping he is dead, as there really was no sign of him. I search every little nook and cranny of the rocks - and shook them pretty hard in the water to dislodge anything...

time will tell - i'm going to wait a couple of weeks and let things settle, we will see if there is any sign of him still.

didn't try the soda water trick - didn't have any on hand at the time.

I'm hoping there isn't too much of a cycle - at least I don't ahve any fish to deal with!

dylanjs - it is when you pour some soda water onto the rock with the mantis. he will get freaked out and pop out of the rock supposedly. I don't know if that would have worked for me - but I think i would have rather tried that instead of dipping it into the fresh water 1st if I had the choice.
