Yes they will. But, from the position you describe, it would only happen if the clam's mantle extended far enough to come in contact with the aip. The aip will not sting it through the shell if that's what you're thinking. They can also sting if the are down around the bysal opening. HTH.

My maxima clam looks to be dying and I have noticed there is an aptasia connected to the side of the clam's shell. Does anyone know if the aptasia could possible be stining and killing the clam?

I bought a bunch of mail order clams once and they all were infested with aips. The clams were healthy though, and didn't seem to be bothered by the aips. It took about a week for my resident peppermint shrimp to eat them all.
