Who use or used Powerheads as return pumps from sump?

Some time ago, I used a Hagen 802 Aquaclear Powerhead to this purpose.

I am thinking to do it again.

I saw some aquariums on the net using powerheads as return pumps?

Who can tell me the experiences with this ?

I'm using a Rio 2100 for a return pump right now... been fine even after running dry a couple of times. Although I want more flow so I'm installing a larger pump when I move my aquarium to my new place.

I'm using a maxiJet 1200 for my return from my under-tank refugium. I didn't need much flow and already had on. Seem to work fine for me. I also have 2 MJ 1200s on the main tank for circulation.

If you want more flow I just say an Aquaclear 901 - something like 900 gph. It was about 110 bucks.

I use a Aqua Clear 402 as my return from a HOT wet/dry for my 55 FO.
